F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the age of 18 Fitzgerald fell in love with the 16-year-old Ginevra King. He used her to create the character of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. After he had dropped out of school he joined the U.S. Army and went to fight in WWI but he never seen any action. I think that he might have used this to create the story The Romantic Egoist, but I'm not sure. He met the women of his dreams but she said he didn't have enough money for her but when he published This Side of Paradise she married him. They had a kid and moved to Europe. He wrote the book The Great Gatsby. This was his greatest book.

"An author ought to write for the youth of his generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward."
Well I don't really know what he means by this but I think he is being very literal in the fist part "Write for the youth", and they are "the critics of the next" meaning that they are going to be the ones who read and judge your work. I don't know what he means be the last part.

Some important events in the 1920s where:
-The great depression
-Prohibiton
-Bootlegging
-KKK founded
-Fist broadcasting station and movies
-Babe Ruth hits 60 homeruns

Phrase: "I have erected a monument more lasting than bronze."

Thesis

Thesis Statement: In the book The Red Badge of Courage Henry, the main character in the story, doesn’t fight to his whole potential, he runs instead of fights, he questions the orders of his superior officers, and he also let his men die.

1st point: Henry runs form battles instead of fighting them.
Sometimes Henry thought that his regiment would lose a battle that they where fighting, but they never would and he would only find that out after he had already ran away. One time that really sticks out is after he and his regiment fought and won a battle, but then when they came back Henry ran because he thought that they would lose. But when he was running away he heard the general say, "Yes, by heavens, they 've held 'im! They 've held 'im!"(Crane 6.49) When he said this he means that they had won the battle.

2nd point: Henry and some of the other men question the orders that they where given.
When an officer gives you an order you follow it because they know what they are doing and even if they tell you that you probably won’t make it through the next battle, which Henry heard from one of the generals. The general had said “I can spare them best of any." (Crane 18.14) What he meant by that was that he could sacrifice the 304th, Henrys regiment, for the good of the army. But even if you get an order like that you go and fight anyway because your life will help save the lives of many more soldiers.

3rd point: He let his men die in a way because he didn’t fight and some of his soldiers die or get wounded.
When you don’t fight you take away some of the chance that you will win the battle. You take away your gun, and when you aren’t shooting you can’t kill anyone. And when you’re not killing anyone they can kill your fellow soldiers. So Henry in a way kills some of his own soldiers by not fighting. They might not die but they could get wounded. And you don’t lie and say that you fought when you didn’t. Like when he was talking to Wilson and said, "Yes, yes. I've--I've had an awful time. I've been all over. Way over on th' right. Ter'ble fightin' over there. I had an awful time. I got separated from the reg'ment. Over on th' right, I got shot. In th' head. I never see sech fightin'. Awful time. I don't see how I could a' got separated from th' reg'ment. I got shot, too." (Crane 13.7) That was a lie he had been running over there.

Saving Private Ryan

Motifs-
Light and Dark- This is shown in the the movie by the choices that some soldiers make on like if they are going to kill a person or not. There is a right time and a wrong time. Like when the captured the German soldiers and then shot them anyway.
Noise and Silence- The noise would be the war and how they acted when they where fighting. The silence would be when they are resting and trying to forget what they just did or what just happened.
Clean and Dirty- Maybe this is how they fight. There aren't really any rules when you are fighting but there are when you have captured an enemy. And maybe the corporal did the right thing in letting that German go.
Youth and Maturity- The corporal grows throughout this movie however he does not grow enough. He kind of gets accepted at the end right before the big fight.

Symbols-
The Dead Soldier- Specifically Wade is the dead soldier that I'm going to talk about. He symbolized the Captions decisions and how they can effect other people and how his life was traded in for the lives of 10 or maybe 20 times as many.
The Flag- The flag represented what the soldiers where fighting for and maybe the beginning and the end of the war.
Cap. Hand- The captions hand represented how people change in time of war. He was a school teacher back home, and now he is a killing machine. His hand shakes because it is such a dramatic change and he is having emotional issues. But when he dies, he kind of goes home and his hand stops shaking.
Themes-
Courage- Courage is a good theme for this movie. You need to have courage in times of war. The soldiers had courage most of the time and when they didn't it cost them.
Manhood- This is shown in the movie by how the men mature and become men in the war. The caption was a school teacher and the war made him a man. Same with the corporal, he was a kid and the war made him mature and become a man.
Self-preservation- This is show in the movie by how the men try to do everything in there power to keep themselves alive. The men don't want to go and fight to get that hill and they say that they don't feel the best about it but they would rather not risk their lives.
Disregard for human life- This is shown many times in the movie. But the part that stuck out the most was after they had taken Panama beach some of the men captured two soldiers and shot them any way and laughed about it.

Ch. 23

In the start of this chapter the officers are telling all of the men to charge. And Henry makes some calculations in his head. He thinks that if they don't charge that they will die. So they charge. And Henry sees the enemy flag and thinks that it would bring him great honor to get the flag. While he is getting the flag he sees that his men have captured 4 enemy soilders while they where retreating. I think they where injured.
My question is: What are they going to do with them?

Ch. 22

In chapter 22 they are fighting in another battle. Henry is watching as four regiments, two form each side, are fighting there own little separate battle. He notes that they just seem to be fighting for each other. The noise stops for a little while and then it roars back up again. Henry sees that the other army is going to overwhelm them. But he has decided that he will not budge and that his body would be the ultimate revenge.
My question is: Why would his body be the ultimate revenge?
